THE DIPPERS

Step back to the seaside and meet the women history forgot.

Long before beach huts lined the shore, lidos welcomed summer crowds, or swimming became a pastime for everyone, there were The Dippers. These remarkable working-class women spent season after season, in sunshine and storm alike, gently guiding bathers into the sea. Their resilience, care, and quiet determination made them an unforgettable part of Britain's seaside story.

Created by Michele O’Brien, Amy Rose and Teresa Grimaldi, The Dippers is an immersive free outdoor performance that brings these forgotten figures vividly back to life. A purpose-built replica small-scale bathing machine takes centre stage, surrounded by costumed characters, whimsical puppetry, automata and music.

Rooted in community and shaped by local voices, this is a show for everyone – curious children, seaside nostalgists, and anyone who has ever stood at the water’s edge and wondered.

Free to attend. No tickets required. Just turn up and be swept in.

We were delighted to introduce The Dippers to the wonderful guests of In Jolly Good Company in the garden marquee at the Museum of East Dorset. While a Dorset Art Weeks exhibition was taking place inside, our session moved outdoors, and despite the steady rain, the weather only added to the sense of fun and togetherness.

Guests enthusiastically explored the costumes and horse head prop, sparking lively conversations and cherished memories of seaside holidays gone by. Stories of swimming in the sea, building sandcastles, and enjoying traditional beach games flowed freely, bringing smiles, laughter, and meaningful connections.

It was a joyful afternoon that celebrated shared experiences, encouraged reminiscence, and supported wellbeing in a truly memorable way. We can't wait to return and share more special moments with them in the months ahead.
